The first time she appeared on screen was at age four when she starred in T is for Tumbleweed. The film, which was a short one subject, was nominated for an academy award. Her first movie came out as Dora in Jory in 1972. When she was 18, she appeared as her mother Joan Crawford in 1972 television show The Sixth Sense. The show was Joan's final performance on stage. There is widespread belief that Anne did not want to play Laurie Strode for John Carpenter's Halloween in 1978. Jaime Lee Curtis was cast in its place. Carpenter said the actress was his initial selection for the role but she refused. Anne did not recall being contacted with the name of John Carpenter nor being offered the job. Agents could have rejected the role in her name and with no knowledge. She was initially chosen for the part by Glen Larson who sent her a very preliminary script for an appearance in the 1978 television series Battlestar Galactica. She originally rejected the position due to the fact that she thought her character was weak. Glen created a brand new character to play for her featuring Sheba being a more formidable persona. The Living Legend's first 25-page script had been read by her, and she immediately endorsed it. The show lasted just one episode. She was in Joyride, a 1977 movie co-starring Desi Arnaz Jr. Melanie Griffith Robert Carradine (son Desi Arnaz Jr. Lucille and Lucille) and with Robert Carradine.
